Jailed Noodles: It's just water and noodles

Who: Miki, Edgeworth, Anyone who wants to visit Miki in the slammer
What: Some pre-trial talks
When: January 14th
Where: Prospero City Jail
Rating: PG

[This wasn't really how Miki wanted to spend a weekend, or any weekend, really. She had gotten in trouble before of course, but usually her mother was there to come in and take care of it.

But now she was in Jail, waiting for some guy to come in and talk to her about what she did. She didn't think what she did was that wrong, she was gonna take the chains off after she was done, and she wasn't going to try and hurt anyone, she wasn't even going to touch any of the normal students.

She spend most of the night awakes and staring at the ceiling from her cot, Thinking about how she got here. It's just like when she was away from home after high school again, everything went out of control then too and she had to end up going back home anyway. Miki doubted that they would let her go home now, everyone seemed so serious about what she did.

"Maybe Mom was right, I need to start thinking about what I do first" she thought, still mostly motionless in her cot when the officer came in to take her to the meeting room.

Feel free to come visit and talk to/Mock Miki for her incarceration.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth is glaring harshly at you. (I see a guilty defendant)

[A man in a burgundy suit with some frilly thing around his neck enters the visitors' area of the jail looking like he got up on the wrong side of the bed and got punched in the gut for it. And guess what, Miki? He's seating himself at your window. And glaring at you.]

Are you Onimaru Miki?
truthsnomiracle: (Glaring in fear's face)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[The strain in this man's voice is evident. Apparently it's only by forcing himself to talk slowly that he can remain even remotely calm under the circumstances:]

My name is Miles Edgeworth. I've been assigned to prosecute your case. However, prior to that, I feel that I must have a word with you.
truthsnomiracle: (Deskslam)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Because under the circumstances, no matter how well I might present the case against you, there is no way for me to prove to natives of Prospero that your motive is rooted in anything but an elaborate delusion -- [here, Edgeworth slips enough to slam the counter and begin to raise his voice] -- when I am entirely aware of the truth of the matter! Do you have any idea what sort of position you've put me into?!
truthsnomiracle: (Lost patience)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This is because I'm not the one who assaulted several youths and went to great lengths to guarantee the ability to do so. That, however, is beside the point. Due to the natives' blindness to the Dark Hour and all that accompanies it, this is a situation in which the justice system is poised to fail. As I cannot in good conscience present a false case, yet the truth is beyond the natives' reach, the only verdict that I can see the case concluding with will serve no one at all -- a false declaration of your insanity, and the ruination of your life that this implies.

[Confused at how your "enemy" is treating you yet, Miki?]
truthsnomiracle: (Looking down on you)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Was that a wince? Hard to tell, as Edgeworth is quick to remind himself that he's no longer what he was just accused of being -- that he's better than that now -- and mask his hurt feelings with disdain.]

You have mistaken me for a younger and less principled man, Miss Onimaru. Had the man in question been presented with this same situation, he would have allowed you to suffer in such a way -- your status as a criminal, indeed your status as a defendant, would have been excuse enough for him to turn a blind eye to justice.

Make no mistake -- I am entirely unimpressed by your actions, and if the situation were one that would allow the truth to prevail, I would put everything into proving the case against you beyond a shadow of a doubt. However, as the situation stands, the truth can only fall through the holes in the natives' capability to grasp reality, as much as I may wish otherwise. As a result... in this case, proper scrutiny of the facts cannot result in justice. There is no path to a trial for your crimes that is truly fair.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth stares into the storm with a brooding, grim expression. (Stormy)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm saying that your choice is between a jail and an asylum, and that the latter would be both the most likely result of a full trial and an entirely inappropriate punishment. ...Though I loathe to take the steps necessary to enable it, I wish to offer you the opportunity to be sent to the former instead.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth is rubbing his forehead with his fingers to stave off a headache. (Must I explain again?)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you not been listening, Miss Onimaru? A fight for your innocence cannot end well. Your motive will need to be established, and said motive's roots lie in the Dark Hour -- a phenomenon that you and I will be alone in realizing the reality of. Your defense attorney is unaware and incapable of said awareness. The same can be said of the judge and of most if not all of the jury. They will mistake any explanation of the Dark Hour for the ravings of a lunatic, and as Personas are invisible to the natives, I am powerless to correct this error.

[He's starting to sound a bit choked up here...]
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth points and occasionally waves his finger as he talks. (Making my case)

1/2

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Miss Onimaru, do keep in mind that I am the prosecutor for this case, that you did in fact chain up multiple doors in the school and assault several students, and that I have the means by which to prove that not only did this happen, but that your actions were premeditated. You cannot win against the truth.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth looks away sourly while grabbing his left elbow with his right hand. (Emo)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-15 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...The quandary lies in the fact that in this case, the truth cannot win either. A mistaken impression of your line of reasoning would emerge from such a fight, and you would be punished accordingly. I have seen what can happen to someone who is wrongfully declared insane. Upon his release, the former defendant found his life in ruins -- his former job unattainable, his fiancee dead from suicide, his words never heeded again. He was forced to play the role in which society had typecast him for nearly his entire life thereafter. He grew so bitter that another man was even able to manipulate him into becoming an instrument of vengeance.

Your crime... is not so heinous as to deserve that.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth is glaring harshly at you. (Glare)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
To begin with, you did not have to do such a thing. You were not operating under coercion, nor was there any lack of alternative means by which to subject the students to combat training. Had you for but a moment given due consideration to how best to accomplish your goals in ways that would remain within the bounds of the law -- at the least, by involving consent -- you would not be in this position to begin with! Ergo, your actions are deserving of punishment; I merely wish it to fit the crime as closely as the circumstances allow.

Furthermore, I cannot in good conscience give a full trial anything but my all. It is a prosecutor's duty to ensure that every facet of a case be brought to light, lest a false verdict be rendered. The man who would twist the truth to serve his own ego... is a man who must remain dead. To be entirely honest, I feel unclean in even considering the compromise that occurs to me.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth closes his eyes and sighs. (Sigh)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[And with that, Edgeworth calms down considerably and sighs in relief.]

Thank you. If it's any consolation, your cooperation does allow you the opportunity to potentially suffer as light a sentence as the charges allow. Are you familiar with the concept of a plea bargain?
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth is side-eyeing you disapprovingly. (Unimpressed)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
To even suggest that you plead guilty so that I might sidestep the need to argue your case in full is itself a compromise. In an ideal world, I would argue every case until only the truth remained. That simply isn't an option under the circumstances.

Given the context in which we find ourselves, I am indeed willing to grant you leniency in punishment this once as well. It should be possible to not only minimize the length of the jail sentence, but also to commute much of it to a fine, community service, or some combination of these. I cannot guarantee that you won't have to deal with frequent visits from a parole officer, however -- nor can I promise any sort of mercy should your judgment fail you so thoroughly a second time.

[In other words, this is your one Get Out Of Jail Free At A Discount card. Don't blow it, Miki!]
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth crosses his arms and taps his finger on one of them. (Attempting patience)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
It is possible that other kidnappees would be willing to lend you financial aid in your time of crisis, provided that you are indeed worth bailing out. As for a parole officer, that's someone whose job it is to monitor those who might lapse back into criminal behavior, particularly those released from prison ahead of schedule.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth taps his temple, then grins victoriously. (Try using this)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Recall what happens to the natives during the Dark Hour.

If you are truly worthy of the aid, you shouldn't need to ask.
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth shrugs with a smug smile on his face, then shakes his head. (Smug shrug)

I apologize for him...

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Is it not appropriate that you should reap what you've sown?
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth peers at you dubiously. (Skeptical)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Is there no one you can trust to perform such a role in her stead?
truthsnomiracle: Edgeworth crosses his arms and taps his finger on one of them. (Well?)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Given how many warriors there are in this place, I find that hard to believe.

[With that, Edgeworth stands and begins to turn to leave.]
truthsnomiracle: (Turned away)

[personal profile] truthsnomiracle 2012-01-16 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I hope for your sake that we never meet under circumstances similar to these again.

[And off he goes.]
