And how can we win when fools can be kings; (CLOSED)
WHO:
caliburns and
croibhristeoir
WHEN: September 17th.
WHERE: Lancer's hotel room.
SUMMARY: Five of Cups event and all.
RATING: C for Cavity Inducing.
WARNINGS: Cute shit.
[ So Lancer didn't like Saber in modern clothing. She couldn't really blame him for his reaction, nor could she hold it against him. It was distasteful of her in the end, a low blow that a knight shouldn't inflict upon another. They were suppose to be brothers, closer than she ever will be towards Shirou or even her own children should the time ever come. Knights swore upon a different set of oaths and it was cruel to even consider going around them. So she owed him an apology and a silent oath was sworn to never ever wear such vestments in his presence ever again. A man who could tend to her wounds while she was nude shouldn't have to view her in that sort of light and all she could hope for was that it didn't make things awkward.
When he returns to the hotel room, he'll find the lights dimmed with candles lit. Oh boy. At least Saber is dressed fully in her usual suit, taking no chances to offend him. Except for, you know, the whole candle-lit thing she's got going on. ]

[But it had been a shock--this was someone he respected as an adversary as well as one he would follow to hell and back without question. Lancer had never expected to see her dressed like that, and in his surprise he had misspoken.]
[Had he been honest with himself...then he would have said she was beautiful.]
[But the facts of it startled and unnerved him; 'beautiful' was a word that until recently he would have associated with her in combat. With the strength of her blade and the pride in her stance--as a knight, not as a woman.]
[Maybe, Lancer thought as he walked back to the hotel room, that had been his vital mistake. Of course Saber was a knight, but she was a woman as well. And hardly an unattractive one--wait, what was he thinking? He couldn't start nonsense like that. She had Shirou Emiya, had spoken of him fondly...and then gotten quite angry with him, if he wasn't incredibly mistaken.]
[This was a difficult situation.]
[A difficult situation made startling when he walked in the door.]
S-Saber...?

[ Perhaps if she read the stories of modern day romances, her mistake would have been easily noticed. Saber was a simple woman who often thought of the days of old and it's with those thoughts she prepared this. Black fabric draping over the windows to make it as dark as a time without a city full of lights. A time where only candles and torches lit the room - but after an unfortunate incident with the smoke alarm, she's learned that torches create a bit too much smoke.
So she settled for candles. The table is set (not helping the illusion any) with various foods, unsure as to which he liked - but then again, they both hailed from a time where feasts were commonplace. Where one could choose more than one food item to eat from. ]
Is there a reason you stammer when you speak my name? [ A quieter tone. ] Am I no longer welcomed after ...

I was just a little surprised. Is there a reason you've gone to such lengths and done something this impressive?
[Because he wouldn't dare lie, it was impressive. Remarkably like home, though in a very different way.]

[ That's all. Awkwardly staring at the floor, she can't even bring herself to look at him. A single moment and he wrecked her self-esteem within his presence.
A reminder as to why she doesn't allow people to get close to her. ]
I can toss all of this out if you prefer. Just give the word and I shall cease with this.

[He stepped forward with a smile, resting a hand lightly on her shoulder.]
Please, Saber. I can't truly say I know entirely what has upset you this much, but I assure you that your efforts have not gone unappreciated.

Do you truly wish to know what troubles me, Lancer?

I...hadn't meant to imply such a thing, Saber. I was startled and didn't think properly before I spoke--for that, I'm sorry.
it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

[ Time to test a knight's will. ]

I just do not understand, Lancer. [ Spoken as she slips the jacket off of her arms, letting it fall to the floor behind her. ] How you can dress my wound while I am nude, yet the moment I wear something to gain your favor, you get upset.
no subject
-...w-wait, you were wearing it to gain my favor?
[See that sliiiiight amount of red on his face? You have about five seconds before it gets a whole lot more noticeable.]
no subject
I just would prefer if things.. went back to normal. I do not enjoy knowing I have done something cruel to you.
no subject
[And that's five seconds.]
I don't...believe it was stupid or cruel at all, Saber.

[Lancer had plenty of experience with women. Women acting completely of their own free will were another matter entirely.]
...I thought you looked fantastic.

Tell me, what do you know of this country? Of their traditions? It seems different than back in Fuyuki.

Do you ever think it possible that we could achieve such a state? [ A pause. ] Normalcy, that is.
no subject
[A sigh.]
I don't know if we can find a way back or if one even exists, but I don't think I would take it.
I don't...want to go back to being a Servant.

[A small, almost forlorn smile slowly crossed his face.]
I wasn't entirely sure if thinking like that was the same as giving up--but if I go back, all I'm fighting for is a corrupt Holy Grail. Winning that for any Master would be worse than dying in the process.
So...I guess it's okay to want want a life like this. It's the only chance we'll get, so it's...alright to be selfish just this one time.
