Time for Tanabata!

WHO: Haruhi and whoever else is around!
WHEN: July 7th, early evening.
WHERE: Roof of the Bayview Hotel
SUMMARY: It's Tanabata~ will Hikoboshi and Orihime meet tonight?

WARNINGS: None.

Even though she was now in America, Haruhi wasn't going to let one of her favorite holidays go by without notice! The high schooler had gathered all the necessary items for her own tanabata celebration on the roof of the hotel. Earlier in the day she had hunted down bamboo potted plants (or what appeared to be bamboo; if it wasn't perfect that was fine), and gathered colored pieces of paper and string. The weather had managed to cooperate with the holiday as well; the skies were clear, and though they were a bit dimmer due to the city lights, the stars could be clearly seen.

"So I figured out last year that it would take 25 years for my wish to get to one star and 16 years to the other," Haruhi mumbled to herself. "But if they're coming from America would it be different? Maybe a little faster since Americans are so speedy and impatient." She flopped down on the ground and pulled a magic marker's cap off with her mouth.

"Wish time!" Ignoring everything around her, Haruhi began scribbling her wishes on two different pieces of paper.

Naoto hasn't really gotten the chance to explore the entire hotel so today she finally makes her way up to the roof only to see that someone else is here already.

And...they're talking to themselves. She approaches quietly, noting that this person is scribbling something down about what did she say...a wish?

"What are you doing?"

"What does it look like I'm doing?" Putting the final character on her paper with a flourish, Haruhi thrust it up in the newcomer's face.

"It's Tanabata! I'm making my wishes!"

She looks over the newcomer again, squinting at her face. "You're Japanese, right? Don't tell me you've never done this before!"

She doesn't flinch when the paper is shoved in her face and instead looks at it with a not so pleased expression then pushes it to the side.

To be honest, she had forgotten all about Tanabata. "Yes, I'm Japanese but I haven't celebrated Tanabata since I was a child."

Haruhi frowns slightly. "Well that's just silly. Wishes aren't less effective when you're older or anything."

"It isn't that. I just find the act childish." Not to mention she's always been too busy with cases to do such a thing.

"How is this childish? Even my grandmother makes tanabata wishes!" Annoyed, Haruhi picks up a new piece of paper and a marker to hand to the newcomer.

"Give it a try! And then tell me that it's childish!" She really isn't going to let this go easily.

"Taking the time to make wishes is a waste of time. Especially when there are more important things to be done." Staring at the marker and paper, she shakes her head.

"No, thank you." And she won't give in that easily.

"And arguing with me isn't a waste of time? What could you possibly be doing at this time at night on the roof anyway?" Grabbing her one finished wish, Haruhi walks over to the one plant to hang it up.

"It is a waste of time. I only came up here to inspect the roof, that's all." She watches her hang up the wish on the plant.

"What did you wish for?" She can't say that she isn't curious.

Sensing their interest, Haruhi covered her paper with a hand.

"I'll only share mine if you share yours! Even if you don't want to write it down, you have a wish in mind, don't you?"

Stubborn girl. She just decides to tell her the main goal she's been aiming for ever sense she moved in with her grandfather.

"I wish to be recognized as the fifth Shirogane detective. Satisfied?"

"Detective? Cool!!!" This person may be a pain, but a detective was interesting! "What kind of mysteries have you solved? Did you find any extraterrestrial things?"

Huh, well that made her take a shine to her didn't it? "I've investigated several murder cases along with a few that dealt with missing people. I can't say that I've come across extraterrestrial things though."

She doesn't believe in that stuff really.

"That's so cool! We solved a murder-mystery in the SOS Brigade once, but it turned out one of our members set up the whole thing as a game. They don't know about real murders."

Even if this person wasn't into Tanabata, they could be useful! "How would you feel about giving the SOS Brigade some investigation pointers? We're trying to figure out what's going on with this whole coffins-at-midnight thing and what-not."

Well that would annoy her to no end if someone just set up a murder to play with her. So she feels slight sympathy that this girl didn't have the chance to actually investigate a real murder...not that murder is a good thing though, it's just fascinating to figure out a mystery on your own.

"I wish I could give you some kind of advice but unfortunately I have yet to obtain much information myself. With the locals unaware of it, I have nothing to go on." She sighs at that, how frustrating.

"Well you could help the SOS Brigade investigate!" Haruhi concluded, hands at her hips. "I only have a couple members here thus far, but with your help it could go great!"

Suddenly, she shoots out her hand. "By the way, I'm Haruhi Suzumiya, leader of the SOS Brigade!"

...She actually wouldn't mind taking her up on that offer. "I'll help you and your Brigade in any way I can."

This girl isn't shy now is she. She takes her hand and shakes it a little. "Naoto Shirogane, it's a pleasure."

"Excellent!" Haruhi smiled. It seemed the SOS Brigade could work in America as well, even without any of the others.

"Oh yes, I should share my wish with you, shouldn't I?" Smiling, Haruhi pulled up her paper. In neat kanji, it read "Have aliens invade Okinawa."

Once she holds up the paper, she reads it...then reads it again to make sure she read that right. "To have 'aliens invade Okinawa' is your wish?"

Back to thinking this girl is strange.

"The aliens have to show up somewhere, right?" Haruhi explained. "And if it's Okinawa, it's close to my home, plus they'll be able to soak up the sun on the beach! You wouldn't want them to go to Hokkaido, would you? They'd freeze!"

"Sure." Just go with it Naoto, just go with it. She's a strange girl but arguing with her probably won't get you anywhere.

Shrugging, Haruhi fixes the plant and grabs another piece of paper. "It'll be a long time before I find out if it'll happen or not though, so might as well look for aliens elsewhere."

Yeah, it might take a long long time. "Why are you so determined to find aliens?"

"Aliens, espers, time travelers; I want to find them all! And it may take awhile, but half the fun is looking, you know?" She smiled. The SOS Brigade and their activities were her favorite topics!

So this girl is just chasing after fictional creatures. "How long have you been after these creatures exactly?"
