Caliban Run

WHY: Saori was a weirdo and wanted to go to Caliban for her birthday.
RATING/WARNING: PG-13 for Violence against Shadows

[A few days ago, Saori sent out a mass text to everyone:

"I'm going to Caliban on the 15th. If anyone wants to come along, please come to the tea house at 11:30. I'll provide a small meal afterwards."]

[Saori was feeling rather restless when dealing with the shadows lately. Not to mention it had been some time since they did a run through that mysterious dungeon. Also, though she wasn't going to admit it, it was her birthday. She wasn't the sort to expect gifts and such. She was much more comfortable giving to others instead.]

[It's already 11:30pm and she just waits for people to arrive in the attic base.]

Maybe we'll find something this time, now that we're specifically exploring.

[She glances warily between the two of them as she reloads her gun.]

We'll explore as much as we can, at least. And if we don't find something tonight, there's nothing stopping us from exploring another night.

We had better. I would hate to think that I spent this long putting up with you for no real benefit.

*He gives Gaignun a quick scowl before moving on to the next Shadow in his path.*

[Gaignun really has to bite his tongue here. He shoots another minor shadow while he contemplates his answer.]

Even a rough run of this place would have a benefit.

[She frowns now, sending Iris to take down more Shadows.]

Either way, we don't know if we'll find anything. But Gaignun is right, even just a run of this place will be beneficial, and if we don't find anything this time, we'll just have to explore deeper next time.

*He really doesn't want to come down here with Gaignun a second time and it shows in his expression.*

You'll have to forgive me if I'm not particularly eager to spend another evening in the URTV's company.

*He manages to take down the Shadow he'd attacked, but the sight of how easily April is mowing through them adds yet another layer to his frustration. For a moment, something flashes in his purple eyes, as if there's something stirring just below the surface but not quite ready to come to the front yet.*

What are you even doing in this group anyways Margulis, you haven't even been in Prospero long enough. [The feeling is mutual.]

At least some of the company is decent. [He is very grateful for April's presence, that's for sure.]

You don't have to. The groups you train with and go exploring with aren't set in stone. [While April is very patient, she is starting to get faintly annoyed at how they keep snipping at each other.]

... URTV? [But even her annoyance doesn't suppress her curiosity.]

Hah, still keeping secrets, I see. He's a bioweapon, bred and raised almost solely for war. Hadn't you wondered why someone like him seems so at home on the battlefield?

*The invitation to spill some of Gaignun's secrets seems to ease his frustration a little...or at least give him something else to focus on.*

[Inner groan.] At least I'm not a zealot.

And April is right, you didn't have to come with us.

[Her eyebrows raise as she glances from Margulis to Gaignun, but her surprise soon wears off.]

I... see. Well, I certainly didn't know that. [Despite finding that out about him, her opinion about Gaignun hasn't changed. Though now she's curious about he said.]

*Welp. The frustration is back in full and his next slice at a Shadow has much more force than it needs.*

Prior to certain events preceding my arrival here, I was the High Inquisitor of the religious organization Ormus. However, as I thought I'd made the URTV aware, I've since realized that that organization was nothing but a tool of an entirely different higher power from the one we believed in and cast aside the haze of self-righteous drivel that caused me to act in Ormus' name without question.

[siiiiigh. whoops. He'd momentarily forgotten about that in his annoyance at Margulis. He's too used to thinking of him as the High Inquisitor and colonel.]

Yes, we've had that discussion. However, that does not erase the fact that some of your mannerisms are so ingrained that you still act like it, even if you don't really believe anymore.

... [Another Shadow is shot down before she turns her attention back to them.]

I see... And have you two always been at each others throats like this? [What is tact.]

*And another Shadow viciously bisected. But he's used to having various buffs running, so fighting like this is probably a bad idea.*

Ormus and the Kukai Foundation have been more or less at war for years. And meeting its director in person hasn't particularly enamored me of him, even in the absence of political tensions.

*Except one of the reasons he can't get along with Gaignun is because he's so used to the political tensions...*

You aren't the most pleasant person yourself, Margulis. And besides, even if I wasn't the director, you would still hate me.

Now can we please just move on to a different topic or just concentrate on the enemies in front of us?

[Another sigh as she rubs her forehead and then she nods.]

Yeah, let's just... focus on fighting the Shadows. The more we explore of this place, the better.

*He would, but he strangles his retort down to an irritated growl and turns his attention to running another Shadow through the closest thing it has to a face.*

[Thank heavens for small favors, Gaignun thinks as Margulis finally stops talking.]

April? Do you know where the blockade to the next part is?

[April sends Iris to take down another couple of Shadows as she thinks.]

Sorry, but I'm not sure... Like I said, I haven't really explored much of this place.

Then we'll just have to keep looking until we find it.

*He's still struggling to even come close to keeping up. It's absurd. Why is he so weak here? These things should be child's play!*

*He looks surprised for a moment when the voice sounds in his head again, before he realizes what it must be.*
