[Finally, something Klaus is good at! This is familiar. He's done this a million times, between being a baron and being the Baron ruling the country. Funny how a good party can make the rest of the nobility forget you're holding their children hostage. My god, this is even music he knows how to dance to. Everything is coming up Wulfenbach tonight!

He only regrets that he's on a teacher's salary and there are really no decent tailors in Prospero, or else he'd have really gone to town with his outfit. As it is, he's wearing a simple but elegant suit and a mask which he actually made himself out of scrap from his lab. The left eyehole is filled in by more decorated metal, of course: a scarred and empty eye socket is likely to put a damper on a potential dance partner's enthusiasm.

[It's actually the mask that piques Edel's curiosity enough for her to actually approach Klaus. She politely curtsies as she greets him.]

Good evening, sir. Pardon my curiosity, but where did you acquire such an interesting mask?

[Oh, someone actually noticed! He feels rather flattered. Compared to some of the other masks on display his isn't quite as... well... decorative or delicate. Certainly nothing like Edel's.]

I made it myself, actually. Nothing sold in this city was quite to my taste or in line with my image.

[It's hard to find a mask that doesn't look ridiculous on an extremely tall man built like a brick wall, okay.]

[That didn't mean it wasn't interesting in its own right. In some ways it reminded her of all of the gears and other machinery that existed in the inner workings of the story that control Gold Crown. Also, Edel doesn't seem to be particularly fazed by his size.]

Indeed? You must be quite accustomed to working with metal, then.

[She pauses uncertainly for a moment then.]

Do people introduce themselves at occasions such as this? There's the masks, of course, but I'm uncertain if they are truly intended to conceal our identities or if they're meant more as decoration.

I believe it would be the latter, in this case. Of course, one may be expected to play along with the concealment of identities for the purpose of frivolity, but I don't believe this to be that sort of party. So.

My name is Baron Klaus Wulfenbach. And yes, I am quite used to working with metal. Not generally for decorative purposes, I will admit, but the skill has many applications.

My name is Edel, and it's a pleasure to meet you, Baron Wulfenbach. Are you an engineer of some sort as well, then?

In a manner of speaking. I am a Spark, which means that my talents do indeed include engineering, though by no means is that their limit. My actual area of expertise has more to do with the human body, particularly the nervous system. You could call me an organic engineer.

[He seems rather pleased by that explanation.]

...I see. That sounds rather interesting. Are there many Sparks in the world you come from?

[Don't worry, Papa Bird. Saori here is staying sober for this party. Besides, there was always tomorrow's local St. Patrick's Day celebrations. She approaches him with a smile.]

[Good. Stay far, far away from anything vaguely alcoholic. Dear god, please.]

Good evening, Saori. Enjoying yourself thus-far?

[He finds it interesting that after all the ridiculous things they've wound up doing together, she still refers to him by his title. It's somewhat endearing.]

[It's mostly out of habit and she's too polite to call him by his name.]

I am. This is the first time attending a party like this, to be honest. I didn't over do it with my outfit, did I?

I certainly don't think so. The purpose of a ball is to dress extravagantly. All things considered, the both of us are on the remarkably tame side of things in terms of fashion choices. Of course, you likely pull off something more flamboyant, whereas I could not. And wouldn't want to.

That's right, these sorts of parties are common for you, aren't they?

Actually I'm quite satisfied with this. Any more elaborate and I'll feel like I'm dressing for my own wedding.

[Realizing what she just said she blushes and corrects herself.]

Which is not happening any time soon, by the way.

Mm. A little too common, if you ask me, but I am in a position of power and thus obligated to entertain. For political reasons I cannot deny that it serves its purpose.

[He catches that comment and her speedy denial and smirks.]

Oh? I would have thought otherwise, judging from how you were acting a few weeks ago.

That's true, but at least this time it's strictly just for fun.

[She pouts and lightly punches his arm. For the record, they still haven't really gone past the first base and a half.]

Part of it was the shadow's influence even though I did plan out some of it myself. Besides, I don't think he'd actually pop the question. I don't mind initializing things, but not all the time.

Mm. I'm assuming the near-homicidal possessiveness was the shadow? For a moment I worried some of my Spark had rubbed off on you.

[Saori can assume anything she damn well pleases about Spark relationships based on that. It'd be about right.]

Besides, you haven't been courting nearly long enough for either of you to consider marriage. Granted, courtship seems to work very differently in this society, but I am fairly certain 'a few months' is not long enough even here.

Correct. Last time I checked, I don't believe Spark tendencies shouldn't be rubbing off like that.

No, it's not. Besides, I'm rather content with the way things are right now. Marriage isn't on my plate any time soon.

Good.

Given the way this place seems to be run, I should think romance would be the furthest down everyone's lists of priorities at present, especially something so binding as marriage. Imagine leaving and having to sever ties with your husband because his native reality is different from your own.

[She laughs awkwardly. Of course the ephemeral tendencies of this world would get in the way of something like that.]

Y-yeah, it would be awkward. I guess that would explain why you're so against me dating Kaiji...well besides the fact you keep calling him a ruffian, anyway. I don't regret being in a relationship though.

He is a ruffian. He is a gambler, which is hardly a good quality to have in a husband. I am not necessarily dead-set on you stopping your courtship, but I do hope you're not blinding yourself to his faults. There is nothing that ensures a terrible end to a relationship more than that.

[Is he speaking from experience, here? Sounds kind of like it...]

I'm aware of his gambling habits and I have never financially supported his habit, Baron. Despite that, he does make an effort to be helpful with things. He maybe awkward at times but he's a good man.

[He sighs, shakes his head, smiles.]

Well. Given my own mishaps in the romantic sphere I suppose I've exhausted my right to butt into yours. If you are very sure it won't end badly, and if you truly believe he is a good man, then I'm sure I can't dissuade you.
