Unfortunately, that's not how operas tend to go. Lucia's family does everything in their power to alienate Edgardo and force her to marry her fiance, which causes her mental state to deteriorate.

Why would they do that? Should they not allow Lucia to make her own choice..? It is unfair for them to determine just whom she must marry.

Like I said, there's a feud between their families. It's somewhat like Romeo and Juliet, except instead of some convoluted plot where the heroine fakes her own death, she goes mad and murders her betrothed on their wedding night.
