[HOW ITS LEGEND BEGAN IN THE TWELFTH CENTURY, RIGHT...?

well alright, let's use the first bit of this as a reference]

You can't see the amount of talent going into that? I'll admit, it's somewhat less impressive divorced from the context of the original opera, but it's still a masterpiece technically.

No, I cannot. I hear a woman wailing and I wish to put her out of her misery as I would any animal that howled in the same fashion. [ Really Kayneth. It's not a hard concept. Shit hurts ears. She hurts shit. ] A masterpiece though? Really? Pardon my disbelief, but I cannot bring myself to enjoy this.
enjoymyatelier: zach. they're here. (migrane's a comin.)

If you consider that wailing then I'm not entirely sure what to tell you. [YOU MUST HAVE HEARD WAILING BEFORE, THAT IS NOT IT] Of course she's going to sound miserable-opera, by and large, is full of people being miserable, because that's the sort of story people enjoy. It's catharsis set to masterfully composed music.

[ It sounds like strategic wailing then GOSH. ]

You lost me.
enjoymyatelier: look at him, gesturing flamboyantly. what a twit. (I'M A GENIUS!)

Allow me to explain the opera's plot, then. This particular aria is from Lucia di Lammermoor, one of Donizetti's most famous works. The titular Lucia is in love with Edgardo di Ravenswood, but this is complicated by two things: her brother loathes the di Ravenswoods and will stop at nothing to end their relationship, and Lucia is betrothed to another.

[saber why did you get him started...]

[ Congratulations Kayneth. He has her full attention. ]

Well, that seems strange... If they are in love, then they should be together.

[ Why does this sound oddly like her love life? ]
enjoymyatelier: kayneth fooling you into thinking he's a cool dude by standing in the shadows (too smug to function)

[...it sounds like a lot of people's love lives, honestly...]

Unfortunately, that's not how operas tend to go. Lucia's family does everything in their power to alienate Edgardo and force her to marry her fiance, which causes her mental state to deteriorate.

Why would they do that? Should they not allow Lucia to make her own choice..? It is unfair for them to determine just whom she must marry.

Like I said, there's a feud between their families. It's somewhat like Romeo and Juliet, except instead of some convoluted plot where the heroine fakes her own death, she goes mad and murders her betrothed on their wedding night.

[...he is just self aware enough to be taking a minute to think about this...]
